Feather your nest :: Decorating with quilts.

Red Brolly drawing-Cabinet

How are you going displaying your quilts? Have you got a gorgeous display that you would like to share? If you have please take a photo and share them with us. I would love to see...please??? You can post a link here, if you have a blog or flickr etc, or you can post a photo to my facebook page.

We just LOVE getting inspiration. I might even do a big blog posting on all your gorgeous displays. What do you think?

So, to this week's decorating with quilts idea....it's a little "outside the box." The idea I have is to paint your favourite quilt onto a floor or wall. These displays actually look very stunning! Here's a few examples to get you thinking over the weekend...

And I couldn't resist this stencilled floor, especially since we've just been discussing beautiful doilies,

Feather your nest:: How to decorate with quilts.

Use your gorgeous quilts to show them off at your next gathering of stitchers.

You've put a lot of time into making your quilts, so why not show them off as the centre display for the table?

Table-display

Quilts make lovely table covers and runners. They don't need to cover the whole table either, a small quilt in the middle, placed on an angle makes a cute centrepiece. You could even make matching napkin rings, coasters and embroider serviettes.

Your friends will be impressed!

Feather your nest:: How to decorate with quilts.

An oldie, but a goodie...with a slight twist....

I'm sure we all have quilts which are folded and sitting pretty in a cabinet or on a shelf. As an alternative idea, why not roll some of them up and stand them on end?

This way you get to see more of the actual pattern and design on the quilt.

Here's a great idea to use up blocks that we've sewn, but for some reason or another they haven't made it to quilts.

Feather your nest:: How to decorate with quilts.

This week's "How to decorate with Quilts" idea is to make a display by hanging your quilts on several long rails. This quilt display  from Pottery Barn, looks fabulous.

Instead of just displaying one quilt on your traditional hanger....have a long rail and group quilts according to a certain specification, ie geometric patterns, colours or a theme. Break up the display using quilts with solid colours. And the best part is...when you get tired of looking at the quilts, you can change them around.

Have a lovely weekend...

An idea to decorate using your quilts is to use your quilts as artwork.

This photo is from Ka Du Sei, posted into my flickr group. Hasn't she made a beautiful display using my "Christmas Wish" quilt?

A tip for caring for your quilt...

To protect your quilt when it's not on display, store it in a cool place with good air circulation. Be careful of the humidity as this will affect the storage of the quilt. Your quilts should never be stored in the basement or attic. Always use acid-free tissue paper and acid-free boxes, which are chemically neutral, which will shield the textile from materials that might leach acids into the fabric. Your quilts should never be stored in plastic bags. The bags won't allow the fabric to breathe and can trigger the growth of mildew and mold.

Feather your nest:: How to decorate with quilts.

Each Friday a new posting I'll be doing is ideas on how to decorate using your quilts. I'll also be giving tips on caring for and looking after your quilts to ensure they last and become family heirlooms. The thing is, we spend so much time, money and effort in making our quilts, it's  such a shame to tuck them away in a cupboard!

Hopefully these postings will give you food for thought and get you to put your quilts out!

I won't say much, as pictures speak much louder than words. Here's the first display idea...

And here's a little something special...earlier in the year in New York was "Infinite Variety-Three Centuries of Red and White quilts." If you missed it, you can read more about it here. Anyway, I found these stunning magnets of the exhibition which would make a gorgeous magnetic quilt display somewhere.

You can purchase them from the Museum's shop, unfortunately, they don't ship overseas. BUT...maybe you have a friend in America you could post them to and they can pass it onto you (???).

Lots of possibilities....

Have a lovely weekend.
