Christmas Craft :: Felt Red Robin pattern and tutorial
Looking for some Christmas decorations to make to bling up your Christmas tree....or, sideboard (think my sideboard competition...hint hint hint)? How about this cute little Christmas Red Robin? He would look great hanging from a Christmas tree branch, a sideboard, or if you have a little bit of time...make a red robin bunting! He even looks great blinging up your presents as a present topper!
Here's the how to...
What you'll need:-
Felt in 7 different colours- you can go traditional or non-traditional colours but you'll need different coloured felt for the background piece, the body and wings, face and inner body, chest feathers, beak, eyes and the iris.
Scissors
Embroidery thread and needle (I like Chenille #24 to sew with)- or you could even glue him together, or sew him on the sewing machine (as I did, as I was a little pressed for time...!!)
Ribbon to hang him, or peg to attach him to a present
and of course....
the Red Brolly Felt Red Robin pattern.
Download Red Robin (Templates).
Ok, so download and print your pattern. Cut out your pattern pieces as per the instructions.
Then it's just a matter of layering and sewing the pieces together.
Take your background piece and your 2 wing pieces. Place the wing pieces on top, as shown an stitch around the edges, securing them in place. Next take the outside body piece, position in the centre, on top of the wings and secure by stitching around the outside. Next is the inner body piece. Place in postition- ensure that it is in the centre- and stitch into place. Then grab the chest feather piece, place in teh centre, on top of the inner body piece- sew around the edges- keeping it in place. Now it's time to make his face. Place the beak piece in the centre, as shown in the photos, slightly on top of the chest piece- sew into place. Then the outer eyes and finally the circle iris piece. Stitch them all into position with a few quick stitches.
Now it's time to add a few accent, decorative stitches.
Stitch some colonial knots for eyes...here's the tutorial if you've forgotten. Backstitch some legs and feet. Add some large stitches for the tail feathers.
Stitch 3 large lazy daisies to give him a few chest feathers. Now, I know you read my tutorial on lazy daisies (or detached chain), but here's the link JUST in case.
And that's your Red Robin finished. You can add a ribbon to hang him from your tree...or you can reduce the pattern by 20% and he makes a great present topper!
Here's one I made in non-traditional robin colours...
And look who's just appeared in my house....
Watch out for him on the blog. Gosh, I hope he doesn't make too much of a disturbance....!

Cute, cute, adorable creature! Thanks, you put my creativity to work forever!(◕‿-)
Hugs!!!!

What a beautifull pattern of the robin. It will make a cute present topper for the daughter of my nephew named Robin.

Could someone tell me how to embroidery edges like that? Do you need a special machine or is it done with general machine settings and freehand? Thanks for your help.
