Feather your nest:: How to decorate with quilts.

Untitled-3

Each Friday a new posting I'll be doing is ideas on how to decorate using your quilts. I'll also be giving tips on caring for and looking after your quilts to ensure they last and become family heirlooms. The thing is, we spend so much time, money and effort in making our quilts, it's  such a shame to tuck them away in a cupboard!

Hopefully these postings will give you food for thought and get you to put your quilts out!

I won't say much, as pictures speak much louder than words. Here's the first display idea...

And here's a little something special...earlier in the year in New York was "Infinite Variety-Three Centuries of Red and White quilts." If you missed it, you can read more about it here. Anyway, I found these stunning magnets of the exhibition which would make a gorgeous magnetic quilt display somewhere.

You can purchase them from the Museum's shop, unfortunately, they don't ship overseas. BUT...maybe you have a friend in America you could post them to and they can pass it onto you (???).

Lots of possibilities....

Have a lovely weekend.

AND THE WINNERS ARE .....

Brolly Girls Packaging
Firstly a big thank-you to all my "sisters" on the Red Brolly Blog for all your wonderful- and sometimes very emotional- entries in the "Sisters" competition.

Sorry for the delay in announcing the winners- but the judges had much difficulty in deciding which ones were the winning entries.

My sister-in-law, SJVH, said there had to be a prize for the funniest entry. I hadn't thought of that- so she's chosen the winner of the funniest "sister" entry- which will be an extra prize!

  O.K- these are the winners:

 Nadine:   renauxnadine@yahoo.fr

"I've been blessed with 2 younger sisters, each of us very different , with our own personalities. However I think my sisters are a door leading back to childhood and innocence. Each time I see them, I just can't help remembering those good old days. Being the eldest, I tend to be protective, especially since our beloved mother passed away, 16 years ago... but do not imagine our relationship is only made of nostalgia! No, no, no: we love having fun together, and we know that we can count on each other, come rain or come shine... Some other special sisters have come to embellish my life: these are the close friends that I met through quilting and blogging. I'm calling them my sissies, and they really are. How couldn't I be happy with such blessings in my life?"

Pepe:   pepeepep@libero.it

To have a twin sister means have an additional life memory.(Do you remember when....?),it means open the fridge and find out a slurp-gift (or leave it in her fridge) and looong walking all together in the evening with our dog and husbands talking of anything and feeling the summer together ....

Bronwyn:  (not me- a different Bronwyn!)   brickies@primus.com.au

"My sister is a dag! She is rough and tough and protected me at school. She thinks I am crazy cutting up pieces of fabric and then joining them back together. But never says no when I offer her one of my latest creations. Gotta love her!!!"

And My Sister-in-Law's Choice:

Silvia Broekhuis:   l.broekhuis1@kpnplanet.nl

"I don't have a sister but my friend Janny is the sister I don't have. She's the one that comes to the hospital(after I had a motor accident)and helps me to remove the black hairs on my chin....When I wqasn't able to go to the bathroom. I didn't want to show them to the doctors....

And now I am at home she's the one that makes things going ok in the house with four daughters..."

My sister-in-law loved this one because her grandmother Doris made the plucking of black chin hairs when in hospital a Family Law for other members of her family!

Congratulations to all the winners!

Could the winners please contact me privately at:

Sisters- a video and a pattern

Here's a lovely video from Sisters- The world's largest outdoor quilt festival.

It gives some great insight into the background of the show. It goes for 10 mins...but is really inspiring to watch.

This video shows wonderful images from the festival, with music and interviews with the Quilter's from Gee's Bend. Gospel singers who get together to sing and make quilts. Currently they are making a documentary on the singer's. Very inspirational, with one woman quilting for over 64 years!

Not forgetting my "Sisters" pattern...

Sisters-The largest outdoor quilt show.

On Saturday a small town in Oregon, called Sisters, aired out their quilts and threw down the welcome mat. The town closed all of it's streets for their annual outdoor quilt festival. What started as a quilt shop owner hanging out 12 of her students quilts, it has now blown out to the world's largest outdoor quilt festival-with over 1400 quilts on display this year. It is now an annual event which has been running for over 34 years.

Sisters is now a marvelous festival with workshops, sewing tutorials, with opportunities to meet designers, have books signed, listen to lectures, participate in children's activities- all whilst walking the streets admiring the wonderful quilt display. Sisters completly covers the town in quilts, with every shop displaying quilts-Wouldn't it be wonderful to visit?

Anyway, I'll let the pictures speak for themselves....
